Wind Mobile’s Fair Use Policies for Potential Network Abuse

The information just keeps rolling in. As expected there will be internal caps that WIND will monitor to flag potential network abuse. We all knew data caps would likely happen, but I never thought phone call caps would be in place. I do understand the need for this, so I can’t fault WIND for this. I hope this does not deter anyone from signing up with WIND.
Before I provide this information, I have some info I would like to share with Ken Clement & Tony Lacavera. I would love to get an email from you, I have some very useful information for you.
First we start with the Data Plan Caps
Blackberry, Smartphone and USB Sticks will be flagged once they hit 5gb of data. Speed throttling could potentially happen also.
WAP Browsing which would be data from a basic handset, would be flagged at 500mb and speed throttling could potentially happen also.
Voice Calling
If you use more than 3 hours per day of WIND to WIND calling for a billing cycle, the account will be monitored. The same applies for province wide calling. If you use more than 1 hour per day for a billing cycle of Canadian/U.S. long distance, the account will be monitored.
Text Message Monitoring
If you average more than 150 Wind to Wind or 150 outgoing text messages per day, per billing cycle, the account will be monitored.
Picture messaging, the same as above applies except for 50 messages per day.
Month to Month Credit Limits
Rate Plan 1 (Chat) – Monthly Limit is $45 and the Daily Credit Limit is $30
Rate Plan 2 (Always Talk) – Monthly Limit is $70 and the Daily Credit Limit is $30
Rate Plan 3 (Always Shout) – Monthly Limit is $90 and the Daily Credit Limit is $30
If the customer exceeds triple the monthly fees, they will be contacted to investigate.
Example: You are on Always Shout and your balance exceeds 3 x $90 = $270, expect a phone call.
Feel free to leave a comment or jump in the forums and let us know what you think.

The text messaging monitoring is hilarious. If was around maybe 9 years ago, I would have gotten a phone call in one day. Seeing I use to send over 300 sms a day just to the US.

I completely agree with you there, my contract with telus is up for renewal in 2011, i don’t think i will renew unless they match, or beat WIND..

Wind to Wind = 5400 Minutes a month
Long Distance = 1800 Minutes a month
Wind to Wind Text = 4500 Texts a month
Outbound Texts = 4500 Texts a month
Picture Messaging = 1500 Picture messages a month
This is a 30 day month, so yeah – it’s not always accurate… but – really?
If you are using the phone that much, you might want to talk to a real person to preserve your sanity. I was on the road 205 days in a year and still never used those numbers on phone cards and Shaw home phone! lol

Honestly the 4500 outbound sms I can probably do in a heart beat, but the rest probably not. Picture messaging I guess if I used facebook and twitter like a madman LOL

I consider all these caps more than fair for the average user. The Big 3 have allowed the abuse of a few to restrict the rest of us.

I think caps are good to a certain extend. They are there to protect the end user. It will avoid the $80,000 bill we heard from a bell user. If the use are legit, then Wind knows they will be paid so there is no problem. If it is not, then wind can nip the problem in the butt immediately.
It is different strokes for different folks.

Are you in school? How are you averaging 2hrs 13 mins per day AND 333 msgs (outbound) per month? If we assume that you spend 10 seconds per sms (assume you’re a fast typer, short sms, multiple recipients) that works out to 55.5 mins per day, not counting incoming. So you are spending well over 3 hours (maybe 4 hrs) a day on your phone? And you’re a student? That’s insane! Put down the phone and hit the books.
And yes, you’re the very reason why fair use policies were made.

um around 10 in and out and i sent around 300 on a week day
but still my 5 mb worth of texts a month shouldn’t do anything to the network
10 000 times 0.5 kilobyte = 4.8828125 megabytes
although a couple thousand minutes is quite the load

This company is the biggest scam ever. They come out offering an unlimited service to Canada and all there users but now they want to add caps to there users. How is this fair?
Stick to the real companies not some crap that no one can trust!
You people complain but you were all warned before this company made its entry into the Canadian market. If Canada was ready for unlimited the big three would have it.
Grow up and buy a proper phone from a proper company.

The data plan is 5 gig a month, then they cap, more than enough for a phone. The “real companies ” could do this but, get most of their revenue from corporate users , who just pay the bills.
Your comments about scams and companies you can trust, seem to be coming from somebody who works for one of the “proper companys. I’m just a customer.

actually real companies dont operate in just cities they also service rural areas. go outside of Toronto or calgary with a Wind phone and your using data on rogers network..hope you got deep pockets cause ur going to get killed. Wind is a discount provider similar to koodo, fido urban or metro. they offer cheap rates in areas where theres a high concentration of users. Kind of the sell alot of things for cheap with low mark-up the only issue is your buying a product that cuts corners. and eventually your get hit.

For those of us with long memories, (old), I seem to remember Bell Cellular and Rogers Cantel took a while to build out their respective networks. Like it or not, Wind is changing wireless in Canada, they came out with very cheap voice roaming in the U.S. and Rogers suddenly improves cross border rates.
This should be an interesting year.
