Telus to Launch the Motorola Droid/Sholes/Milestone

It seems Android and Telus are getting cozy. They already have the exclusive rights to the HTC Hero, I first leaked way back in June. Now here at TMN we have found out that Telus will have exclusive rights to the HSPA Motorola Droid. The link I have included points you to the European version made for Vodafone/O2 since Motorola has not made the North American HSPA version official as of yet. Look for it to launch in Q1.

LOL by the looks of things, Telus is the place to be. FINALLY some competitive phone offerings from them.

I saw a mini review on Geek Brief last week and as far i as i know, the version going to the states will not have multitouch enabled. Lets hope Telus has more balls than that though.

OK,
Seems that this Motorolo Droid thing might be better then the iphone. I like the 6 simultaneous apps although that’s a little light for me.
Big question is: can you tetter and talk on the phone at the same time??

I loathe the fact that Telus will likely cripple the GPS, disabling Google’s built in GPRS and disabling native GPS, forcing you to navigate using their substandard proprietary NIM software. (Anyone using the Omnia now knows what I’m talking about).
Let’s hope they haven’t developed on for the Android platform.

I just commented on the way Telus rate plan made me feel…raw and used. But the Droid weakens my resolve to stick it to Telus. They got lucky I’ve been in Texas for the last month bombarded by the Verizon Droid adds. I want this phone!

You all know better than to trust Telus. It will be crippled… we live in the dark ages up here. Pay-Pay-Pay. Telus Navigator… junk…
Oh wait! I’m in Saskatchewan, I don’t have to worry along with my Manitoba friends…. NO HSPA for YOU! 1 YEAR! (…or more most likely, by then it’ll be well understood how to cripple “Android 3.x” and have the “Telus Brick”)

I don’t know why people are saying that Telus is going to cripple this phone…
They’ve been pretty good about leaving the phone pristine for a couple of years. Sure, they might add some of their own software to their smartphones, but my WinMo phone I bought last year from Telus has everything enabled. Even GPS and tethering!
Sure, Telus sucks for their crappy plans, but at least their phones are nice.

wrong, they still cripple phones. For example, they had RIM take out WiFi in the BB Curve. Why? So you have to use their data connection. Plain and simple.

You have no clue what you are talking about. There was never Wi-Fi in the CDMA Curve

I will purchase a Motorola DROID through Telus Mike (my current supplier) or Telus as soon as it becomes available. I have waited for this particular phone since rumors started in late-June 2009. I am NOT interested in any other phone. My intent is to develop software for the Telus or Mike DROID. If the DROID (as pictured above) does not become available, I will purchase an unlocked version from the US. Either way, its this phone and no other.

Comment by Me on 14 November 2009:
It will be the Morotola Milestone. A couple of minor differences between it and the DROID, but, really, the milestone should be better/faster, as it will be the HSPA+ version (like Europe) and not the CMDA version south of the border…

Comment by Me on 14 November 2009:
I should add that it will be coming out in the new year (or so they say…) (and I don’t know how to edit, if I even can here)

@vanbc
Itll be hspa and this model will have multi-touch unlike its american counterpart.

Comment by Me on 16 November 2009:
The DROID (the actual model name) is CDMA, the Milestone will be the HSPA+ version. If you go to Motorola’s sites you can see that under the network specs. If you are looking for other phones w/ Android 2.0, they do exist, or at least they will in the near future for your provider. Just do some searching of the major manufacturers… It’ll do ya good.

While it’s awesome for Telus customers to be getting the Droid/Milestone/Sholes/Tao whatever, this is when it sucks to be an early Android adopter. My contract with Rogers was coming up within a few months of the Dream and Magic coming out on Rogers so I re-upped for 3 years and got a Magic. Good thing I dropped my phone in beer and now it’s unreliable. I say “good thing” because I can justify getting a new phone, so I’ll be looking for an unlocked Milestone once they come out.

Comment by Carl on 15 December 2009:
It’s good to know Telus is buying it’s customers with exclusive phone deals. They can’t give a good plan or cheap data – but heck – they have the Hero!
I won’t be coming to an overpriced company for a three year contract for a Hero.
I’ll just stick with a BB or etc and open my choices. I may not be on the bleeding edge – but I still can do everything I need to.
