New TELUS HSPA details emerge
We told you as soon as new info becomes available we would keep you guys posted. TELUS has released some FAQ to sales reps and we have most of the details. Most of this stuff was known but unconfirmed from TELUS. Some interesting tid bits in there though such as which areas wont have HSPA at launch and what support TELUS will offer to unlocked handsets.
- Unlocked non TELUS HSPA devices can be used on the TELUS network and of course TELUS will not promise it will work properly.
- SIM only activations will be allowed.
- TELUS can provide full support for device setup and voice and SMS on a non TELUS HSPA device through client care.
- TELUS cannot provide troubleshooting support for non TELUS HSPA devices or data configuration
- HSPA: 93% of Canadian population covered where as CDMA is 98%
- Users in the Quebec and Ottawa regions will experience 3G+ speeds of up to 14.4mbps until TELUS completes the rollout of 21 mbps in April 2010 .
- The following sites will not have HSPA coverage at launch:
-
- Manitoba (outside of Winnipeg), Saskatchewan, Thunder Bay, Dryden, Nunavut, NWT
-
- Existing CDMA clients with rate plans that include data and/or data add on features will need to upgrade their rate plan/feature to a new suite of similarly priced HSPA data plan options
- In future, TELUS will be notifying clients as they approach their data bucket limits, making sure no surprises arrive with your next bill.
- Unlimited data rate plans will not be eligible for renewals on both CDMA and HSPA, clients should be encouraged to select one of our competitive in market plans.
- Clients who activate a SIM on a BlackBerry data plan will be able to input their SIM card into any other device and use data from the bucket included in their rate plan or add on feature.
- Clients who activate a SIM on a feature phone, PDA or internet key rate plan can swap their SIM card into any other device except a BlackBerry and use data from the bucket included in their rate plan or add on feature. Data usage will not be available without the correct code.
The HSPA thread over at the forums has been updated with all the latest info and is constantly updated as well.

Some TELUS locations are offering this phone for $24.99 on a 3yr term with a data plan.

What do you mean by “sim only activation”?

SIM Only is basically going into a store and activating on the sim card on a rate plan of your choice to use in an unlocked handset

I’m a little confused, so with these new details, does this mean that I can use a current GSM phone (get it unlocked) and use it on the new telus network?

You can use an unlocked HSPA device but not a GSM device. Check out this post in the forums to understand the difference. http://forums.themobileninjas.com/showthread.php?p=7#post7

So anyone with unlimited data plan right now cannot get it once their contract is up? This is BS. I’ve been looking forward to enjoying the iPhone 3GS with my current plan

That’s what jailbreak does. It unlocks your iPhone

So I saw on Telus site about something like that Sask will get HSPA in Q3 of 2010. Is this true? If so is that just in the city or actually out in the country?

Comment by Mr. Alistair on 1 November 2009:
not quite true… “jailbreaking” allows you to load non-app store apps onto your iPhone (think Cydia…) There are further tools to baseband unlock your iPhone to work on other networks. Blacksn0w is set to be released this week to do just that for the latest iPhone 3GS

Comment by Joshua on 3 November 2009:
what about current CDMA clients? Can they just switch over to HSPA sim card if they already have unlocked HSPA phone? (without renewing contract/changing to new rate?) Would there be one time fee for switching over to sim card?

Yes they will move you over no problem as long as you don’t have any old data features not compatible with the new network. They may charge you the exchange fee to activate the SIM card. Today i was able to actually just activate a sim on my account

thanks for all the great answers, kjbninja. I’m from SASK and still have 2 years left on my current contract, so you’re saying in about a year’s time when HSPA is available here, I’ll be able to switch my CDMA account (/w one year remaining) over to a sim card and just flat out purchase a new phone to use that sim card with? Thanks again.

So inside Winnipeg is all set right now?

Comment by kjbninja on 12 November 2009:
@boojay
That is correct. In 2010 the HSPA network will be up and running for ya in Sask
@Lydon
Winnipeg should be all set to go.

Because the First iPhone is Edge and Telus’ network is only HSPA so that iPhone will not work with the network

Telus tech support will help you with that.

Fine print at the bottom states:
†TELUS plans to upgrade from HSPA to HSPA+ service in the Ottawa area and province of Quebec by Spring 2010, and to have HSPA+ coverage in the provinces of Manitoba (beyond Winnipeg) and Saskatchewan by the end of 2010.
oh, and tech support can’t help with unlocked devices FOR DATA.

I have a iphone 3GS from Australia (legally unlocked) that I just purchased on a trip down under. Will it work on a Telus network? I phoned and didn’t get much of an answer from the service people. They said as long as it’s a HSPA phone it SHOULD be ok, but they couldn’t be sure, and all my reading shows that the Aussie Iphone is HSPDA…..HELP!!!!

Comment by Smang on 5 February 2010:
bploh if you take the phone to a telus store they will be able to tell you..they just need the esn.

Comment by bploh on 5 February 2010:
Thanks for the reply Smang…unfortunently I’m still downunder…and if the phone won’t work I’m thinking about just returning it. I heard that Australian unlocked phones will work anywhere in the world just pop in and out the certain countries sim card. I have a basic mobile phone that I do this for right now….just hoping since Canada is my home base that it definitely works there…sorry I’m a real technological newbie….what’s a esn?
[Reply]
Comment by Smang on 8 February 2010:
@bploh The Esn is the serial number of the phone if you take out the battery its a really long number normally starts in 268 it will be under ESN (dec) thats the number a telus rep would need to tell you if your phone works on telus/bell’s network
